The latest roll-out of 3DS firmware updates has just hit us. A few cards still have yet to fix it, but we do have a confirmed list of cards. Essentially, anything that supported 3DS v3.0.0.5 will work with no problems. As always, do not update your 3DS, or keep the wifi switch turned off, until your card is updated first. The only exception is the M3i Zero which does not depend on your 3DS model. Yes, the M3 Team has gone back to using the F_Core.dat usb cable method again, we’re definitely happy about that.

The following cards are confirmed to work on the new 3DS firmware.

Nintendo have just released yet another update for the DSi console that blocks most flash cards. The update might be in response to the 3DS’s 2.1.0.3 update (making both consoles compatible with each other) or it could just be another patch that temporarily disables homebrew applications. Regardless, we recommend that you do not update your DSi or DSi XL until manufacturers have fixes for the new 1.4.3 firmware ready.

The update displays like this after executing:

Most recent update:
June 29, 2011.
Nintendo DSi Menu Ver 1.4.3A
This update provides behind-the-scenes improvements to system performance.

There currently appears to be no noticable difference in system performance so it is widely believed the update exists for either 3DS compatibility or flash card blocking.

In the mean time, continue enjoying your DSi consoles with the 1.4.2 firmware!

Images in this blog post reproduced with the permission of Nintendo DS Cards and R4 DS Revolution

The R4i 3DS is the very first card confirmed to work on the newly released Nintendo DSi v1.4.2 firmware update. There has been a lot of misinformation out there, but we have confirmed this ourselves. No other card to our knowledge works on the new firmware yet, but expect the other developers to release their own fixes shortly. Traditionally the Acekard and EZFlash teams have been reasonably quick to respond so we are waiting on them next, we suspect – although the M3i Zero team have also been working on a fix. We have chronicled the fix for the R4i 3DS in the images below, and have made the .nds firmware fix file available for download.

Please note, that if you own the discontinued R4i SDHC v1.4.1, there is a fix available for that as well but will require a different file. Please visit the official R4i website (r4i-sdhc.com) for details if you do have this version.

Step 1

Pick up the Nintendo console you are going to use to flash your R4i 3DS. If you have not yet updated your Nintendo DSi’s firmware to 1.4.2, you’re fine with the DSi. However, if your DSi is already updated you must borrow a DS Lite, 3DS, or DSi v1.4.1 or lower. You cannot update your R4i card using a Nintendo DSi console that is already using the 1.4.2 firmware.

Step 2

Download the fix file from the R4i official website here and copy it onto the Micro SD card with your R4i menu files. The fix for the R4i SDHC v1.4.1 is available here. Don’t forget you need to unzip the files using a program like WinRAR or WinZIP.

Step 3

Insert the R4i 3DS into your console once all the files are on the Micro SD card

Step 4

Boot into the R4i menu and select the .nds update file.

Step 5

Follow the onscreen instructions and wait for it to complete, it might take a fair while so be patient. The game it shows up as will change to Spongebob Squarepants. It will show a progress bar that slowly gets to 100%.

Step 6

Test it out on the updated DSi. You’ll see the Spongebob Squarepants logo which indicates that the DSi 1.4.2 update was successful.

Please download the fix file below and copy onto your micro sd card. You may have to use a DS Lite, 3DS, or pre v1.4.2 DSi to perform the update.

http://www.dscardworld.com/files/fwup142c.nds

Enjoy your new 1.4.2-compatible R4i 3DS! And remember – all cards bought from DSCardWorld will be pre-flashed so you won’t have to do anything! You can buy your own R4i 3DS card here.

Dear past and present DS fans,

After a bit of a wait, we can now reveal our current lineup of cards that work on the new 3DS console! The reason we did not release this earlier is that we always test every card on new firmware and wanted to be 100% sure all cards are pre-flashed and ready to ship.

It’s worth emphasising that all of the below-cards ship ready-to-work on the 3DS with no flashing required – just put the firmware on your Micro-SD card and off you go. So, without further ado:

Acekard 2i

R4i 3DS

M3i Zero

EZFlash Vi

Unlike other stores, we guarantee all our cards are:

Genuine – direct from original manufacturers ONLY. No fake/clones, or any cards like R4i Ultras/Golds/M3Adaptes/N5/etc.

100% individually (takes a while but it’s worth it!) tested before sending them to customers

24/7 customer support and after-sales service

Come pre-flashed and ready to play!

Also note that the M3i Zeros we have in stock are the newest hardware model GMP-Z003 (manufacturer’s code) that is compatible with the new 3DS console.

Visit the DSCardWorld site now or click on any of the images to head to the store!

As always, any questions or comments, please do e-mail us via sales [at] dscardworld [dot] com!

Every single card now sold at DSCardWorld will work out of the box on DSi v1.4.1. The letter at the end v1.4.1E and v1.4.1U does not matter as firmware is exactly the same. All cards will come with the latest updates pre-applied so there is no need to perform the risky flash process on the outset.

The R4i SDHC is a new model that is compatible with v1.4.1. Currently there is no fix to make a V1.4 compatible with v1.4.1. The iEdge was the last card to get the update, but the Edge team took the time to create their own fix rather then copying the Acekard 2i fix, and released it concurrently with new menu software updates. As before the EZFlash Vi never needed an update.

As always, simply tap the game icon to gain access to the menu once the files have been loaded onto the micro sd card. Currently our cards will show up as the following games.

Hello, quick note, as of today there was a series of updates from Nintendo from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2 for DSi systems that effectively blocks ALL of our cards. We’ve yet to confirm all the details, and this storm of updates might not be over yet. For now do NOT perform any updates, or use the DSi Store on your DSi and DSi XL/LL systems.

In August of 2009 Nintendo released a new firmware update to their DSi system that effectively blocked ALL flash cards from booting their custom firmware. It took weeks to develop the workaround, but it’s been over a year since any update to the system has come up. This update comes as somewhat of a shock to the community. Hopefully users will recall what happened with the 1.3 to 1.4 update and refrain from updating their systems. Here is the quote from the Nintendo Update Page

“September 7th, 2010

Nintendo DSi Menu Ver 1.4.1U

This update provides behind-the-scenes improvements to system performance.”

With the huge release of Pokemon Black & White, and the Nintendo 3DS Release Date announcement on the horizon community experts speculate that Nintendo is trying to clamp down control before moving forward. There is also a Wii update that also blocks homebrew applications from running that was released simultaneously. This is following on Sony’s new strategy for blocking custom run applications on their PS3 and PSP systems and seems to be an industry trend.

This new update was released on Sept. 7th 2010 as 1.4.1 and blocked the vast majority of cards including the Acekard 2i, M3i Zero, R4i, iEdge and the Supercard DSTWO. It seemed like the EZFlash Vi and iPlayer safe, but Nintendo followed up the patch with 1.4.2 less than two days later which effectively blocks every card on the market. Updates to the DSi are completely voluntary, only required for heavy online games like Phantasy Star and the DSiWare shop. Users are encouraged NOT to update as it will render their flash cards useless.

There is no telling how soon updates and workarounds will be released until the developers have had time to investigate. There is no known improvement to the DSi system, or function, this update merely blocks flash cards from operating. Patience is required to allow the development teams time to analyze the problem and ensure their card’s future support, but as long as the update is ignored it’s business as usual.

As we get further details we will report them here.

Stay safe, and happy gaming,

The DSCardWorld Team

For anyone who owns an R4i SDHC, there’s a recent bug out that flashes this screen on boot:

System date error! Please check NDS system date.

The problem is a software based one, and should be fixable It might be caused by any one of the following:

The DS console running out of battery.

Transferring a .SAV file from a different user who perhaps has a different date on their DS.

Attempting to activate cheats in certain applications.

To resolve the issue, we’ve found in some cases that simply changing the date of your DS system back a few days before the system error occurred, or as much as month may fix it. This bug has only been around recently, so all the details are still being uncovered, but it seems like the R4i SDHC team is aware of the issue as they list it on their FAQ http://www.r4i-sdhc.com/rde.asp. Unfortunately they provide no further details, but when a full fix comes out we will, of course, provide that. For now try to reset your date and you should be able to use your R4i SDHC as normal.

As we gather more data it helps us understand what is causing the bug and how to fix it so please feel free to contact us with your information and we will continue to monitor the situation and report to you our findings.

Update: The new version of the software for R4i SDHC red box should fix the problem v1.23b: http://www.dscardworld.com/download.shtml

Please click the image for a larger version.

It shouldn’t be news to anybody that there are loads of flash cards on the market of varying degrees of quality and “originality”, some with very complex relationships. There are clones of clones of copies and keeping track of their history is important to some. For usability the main thing you should be concerned with is proven history of developer reliability. Please note that while some of the cards we carry at our shop are known clones, they are well supported by professional teams of developers that are dedicated to updating their cards.

As a disclaimer, my research is based on rumor and hearsay. If you can prove that any part of the chart is incorrect, comment with a link to the relevant information and I will update accordingly. This article is not a full review of each card, but an explanation of their connections. The list is not exhaustive, and unpopular and discontinued cards were not included to save space. To get an idea of the breadth of clones produced, check out this link with a list of all the firmware available: http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/

While most of the chart is comprised of clones a clone doesn’t necessarily mean a bad and unreliable card, but there are many deliberately confusing labels. A bad fake can mean instability or infrequent updates, but to date there has only been one card that’s been known to cause harm to your DS console. The N5 card had a flaw in the design that caused a short and a blown fuse after so many insertions of the Micro SD card.

Initial teams got started as early as the Gameboy Advanced and kept it up with crude slot 2 flash cards for the original DS console. I’ll give a nod to those teams and discontinued slot 2 cards, some of whom are still at work including the Supercard team. Since then there have been a lot of migration of developers adding to the confusion of whom was making which card.

More advanced slot-1 cards came into development soon after and the R4DS quickly rose to the top in popularity. The R4DSv2 is an upgrade mainly in the removal of the spring-clip sdhc slot. The R4 team and the M3 team are closely related, if not the same team, and the M3DS Simply was a rebranded R4v2 with new firmware, as opposed to an unlicensed clone card. The M3DS Real is a legitimate upgrade and not a clone of the M3DS Simply. The iTouch series comes from the M3 Team, designed as an entry level to their family of cards. The M3i SDHC (clone source unconfirmed as DSTTi or EZ Flash Vi) and the M3i Upgrade are fakes that are NOT from the M3 Team.

Cards from other teams were in development at the time or soon after the R4DS and they lie along the same line on the chart; the DSTT, the EZFlash V, the Acekard, the Supercard DSONE, and the CycloDS Evolution. The Supercard team claims that the CycloDS card is a clone of theirs but this claim has not been substantiated. It is generally considered that the CycloDS is superior to the Supercard DSONE, and proved so valued (if expensive) that it spawned the immensely popular Edge card as a clone.

I know this looks like a family tree for the world’s worst soap opera, but hopefully this answers a few questions you may have. Just remember, especially in the case of the R4 cards, you may need the exact firmware intended to run on your card or clone.
